Leo Rising
Warm, radiant, and impossible to miss.
In astrology, your rising sign (ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. These are traditional symbolic associations offered for reflection and entertainment, not scientific or predictive claims.
First Impressions
Leo rising is described as making a warm, confident, and memorable first impression - someone with presence, who brings energy into a room. People with this ascendant are said to approach new situations openly and generously, often taking a natural leading role.
With the Sun's own sign on the ascendant, the outward personality is often described as dignified and expressive, with a flair for the dramatic and a genuine desire to make others feel good. Others may see confidence first, even when the inner world is less certain.
Style & Presence
Traditional associations include a notable head of hair, an upright posture, a big smile, and a taste for bold, eye-catching style. These are symbolic tendencies, not literal predictions.
How Leo Rising Approaches Life
Leo rising is described as approaching life creatively and wholeheartedly, wanting to shine and to be appreciated for it. The traditional growth edge is sharing the spotlight and hearing criticism without feeling diminished.
Your Chart Ruler: The Sun
The Sun as chart ruler is described as uniting identity and self-presentation; the Sun's sign and house are said to show where Leo rising most wants to shine.
To see where your chart ruler falls, look it up in the planet table of the birth chart calculator - its sign and house are both shown there.

How Long Leo Takes to Rise
The ascendant moves through all twelve signs roughly once a day, but not evenly: because the zodiac is tilted relative to the equator, some signs rise quickly and others slowly, and the pattern depends on latitude. At New York's latitude, Leo rises more slowly than average, making it one of the more common rising signs there.
| Place | Latitude | Time for Leo to rise |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore | 1°N | about 2 hr 1 min |
| New York | 41°N | about 2 hr 33 min |
| London | 51.5°N | about 2 hr 51 min |
| Sydney | 34°S | about 1 hr 34 min |
Times are calculated with the same formulas as the birth chart calculator. They also show why the rising sign needs an accurate birth time: where Leo rises fastest in this table, a birth time that's off by just 10 minutes moves the ascendant about 3° of the sign's 30°.
